Chocolate Meringue Pie

Nanny’s Chocolate Meringue Pie

This was my grandmother's recipe and she would make it every Thanksgiving and Christmas. Has always been one of my favorite pies!

Ingredients
  

  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 3 tbsp cocoa powder
  • 3 lrg egg yolks
  • 3 lrg egg whites
  • 1 12 oz can evaporated milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 9-inch pie crust, unbaked
  • 1/2 tsp cream of tartar
  • 3 tbsp powdered sugar

Instructions
 

  • Combine granulated sugar, cocoa powder and egg yolks in medium saucepan.
  • Add evaporated milk enough to make a paste. Slowly add whole milk.
  • Heat over low heat, stirring constantly until thick.
  • Add vanilla extract and pour into pie crust.
  • Beat egg whites until milky; add cream of tartar and powdered sugar. Beat until stiff peaks form.
  • Cover top of pie with meringue and brown in 350° oven until just browned.
