Nanny's Chocolate Meringue Pie
This was my grandmother's recipe and she would make it every Thanksgiving and Christmas. Has always been one of my favorite pies!
- 2 cups whole milk
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- 3 tbsp cocoa powder
- 3 lrg egg yolks
- 3 lrg egg whites
- 1 12 oz can evaporated milk
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 9-inch pie crust, unbaked
- 1/2 tsp cream of tartar
- 3 tbsp powdered sugar
Combine granulated sugar, cocoa powder and egg yolks in medium saucepan.
Add evaporated milk enough to make a paste. Slowly add whole milk.
Heat over low heat, stirring constantly until thick.
Add vanilla extract and pour into pie crust.
Beat egg whites until milky; add cream of tartar and powdered sugar. Beat until stiff peaks form.
Cover top of pie with meringue and brown in 350° oven until just browned.
